elea Foundation: what it is and what it signals

elea is a Swiss foundation that invests philanthropic capital in companies working against absolute poverty, and it publishes its whole portfolio on one page. A listing means elea put money and multi-year hands-on support into that venture for a stated period. It is a funder's judgement, not a certification, and the page keeps exited ventures on view alongside current ones.

What an elea listing is

elea states its thesis on the portfolio page itself: it "invests philanthropic capital in and provides strategic support to entrepreneurially led ventures that create lasting social impact by giving people living in absolute poverty access to employment, markets, and value chains". Listed ventures are grouped under four themes: agricultural value chains, last-mile retail and services, employable skills, and climate and livelihoods.

Each entry carries a region, a topic, an investment period, the partner entity elea invested in, a description of the business and a short passage on what elea itself contributed. The page also keeps a separate section for ventures elea has exited, which is unusually candid for a portfolio page and makes the investment period the most useful field on any entry.

Who runs it and since when

The investor is the elea Foundation for Ethics in Globalization. In its own words, it was "Established in 2006 and based in Zurich" and it "fights absolute poverty with entrepreneurial means". Its founders, Susanne and Peter Wuffli, provided the founding capital, and the foundation describes the idea taking shape in discussions between 2004 and 2006.

This matters for reading the portfolio. elea is a foundation deploying philanthropic money, not a fund manager investing outside capital against a return target, though it does invite individuals and companies to join what it calls its circle of philanthropic investors. When it exits a venture, it says the released capital is reinvested: "When capital is released through these exits, we reinvest it into new impact ventures."

How an organization gets it

A company joins the portfolio by taking an elea investment. elea says ventures reach it through direct contact with entrepreneurs, through its own network, or through scouting tours in target countries, followed by initial analysis and discussions.

What follows is slower than a typical venture process. elea describes "a comprehensive due diligence and detailed examination" that "can last from several weeks to several months and, in all cases, includes an assessment on-site", then customised structuring of the financial and contractual agreements. After the deal, elea and the venture prepare a Value Creation Plan covering both entrepreneurial and social impact goals, "laying the foundation for a close cooperative partnership over an investment period that typically lasts about five to eight years". The published criteria include a focus on absolute poverty, an established proof of concept, credible leadership, and a meaningful elea contribution beyond capital.

What it signals, and what it does not

A listing signals that a funder with a narrow thesis did on-site diligence, committed for a period measured in years, and agreed impact goals with the company. Elea also publishes what it contributed to each venture, which lets a reader judge how deep the relationship went.

It remains one investor's position, taken at one point in time on its own thesis. It is not certification, not an audit of the venture's impact, and not an assessment of the venture's finances today. Because the exited section stays published and active entries show a start year rather than a status, a listing does not prove a company is still trading or still supported. And because elea is spending philanthropic capital rather than answering to outside investors, its willingness to back a venture says less about commercial viability than a commercial investor's cheque would.

How to verify a claim

Open the portfolio page and search it for the company name; everything elea publishes about its ventures is on that one page. Check three fields against what the company told you: the partner entity, which is often a legal name rather than the brand, the region, and the investment period.

An open-ended investment period marks a current holding, a closed one marks an exit, and an entry in the exited section is a former investment however it is described elsewhere. If there is no record, ask the company which legal entity elea invested in and in which year, then look again under that name; a company claiming elea support without an entry may be describing a relationship with an elea portfolio venture, a grant from another funder, or a conversation that never became an investment.
