MIT Solve: what it is and what it signals
MIT Solve runs open challenges, and anyone can enter. Entering publishes a page; being selected is a different thing. The tier reached, Solver, Finalist, Semi-Finalist or none, is the whole signal, and the public solution page states it.

What MIT Solve is
Solve is an open-innovation platform. It launches challenges with "a research-backed platform and a proven methodology that seeks tech-based solutions from anyone, anywhere in the world", then selects a class of innovators to receive support from MIT and its partner community. It also runs custom challenges commissioned by funders, which use their own prize structures.
Anyone who submits gets a solution page, whether or not they are selected, which is why the platform carries far more published solutions than it has supported innovators. Reading a Solve claim starts with separating those two populations.
Who runs it and since when
"Solve is an initiative of MIT", launched in 2015 and run from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its work is guided by a steering committee that the site says anchors it to "MIT's resources, expertise, and commitment to global impact".
Funding comes from partners rather than applicants: corporations, foundations and philanthropists sponsor challenges and prizes. Judging is done by reviewers and by what Solve calls "Challenge Leadership Group judges (experts and leaders from across industries and sectors)", so selection is made by outside panels convened for each challenge rather than by MIT faculty alone.
How an organization gets it
Applications are open and free. A team creates an account, picks a live challenge, answers the questions and submits before the deadline; Solve notes that "applicants who answer all or most of the optional questions are more likely to be selected". It also runs application clinics for teams preparing a submission.
Selection then runs in stages. "Solve's staff and community will conduct an initial screening", expert reviewers score what survives, and "the 50 solutions with the highest scores" go forward. Judges score those, and "the 15 solutions with the highest scores will become finalists". Finalists take part in "a virtual live pitch and Q&A session, after which the judges will deliberate and select the Solver class". Solver teams join a six-month programme of capacity-building workshops, leadership coaching, pro bono resources and monitoring support, costing about 25 hours in total, and funding follows: "Last year's Solver teams received an average of $40k each" with "access to a pool of +$1M in prize funding". Custom challenges vary these numbers.
What it signals, and what it does not
The tier is the signal, and the gap between tiers is large. A plain applicant passed no bar; their page exists because they filled in a form. A Semi-Finalist was scored into the top band by expert reviewers. A Finalist was scored again by a judging panel. A Solver was chosen after a live pitch and joined a supported class, usually with funding. Treat "MIT Solve solution" without a tier as an application until the tier is confirmed.
Even a Solver place is selection at a point in time, plus a six-month training and funding relationship. It is not an audit, not a rating, and not a verification of the impact claims in the application, which are written by the applicant. The listing is cumulative and tied to the challenge year, so a team selected years ago may have changed direction or stopped trading. Solve's own framing, "Once a Solver, always a Solver", describes continued access to its community, not continuing assessment.
How to verify a claim
Start at the Solvers listing and search the organisation name, then open the solution page itself. A solution page carries the organisation name, the team lead, the headquarters city and country, the challenge it was entered in, and the tier label where one applies; one page from the 10th Anniversary Global Challenge shows the label Finalist beside the organisation. The challenge name gives the year.
Absence of a tier label is itself the answer: the entry was an application. There is no expired or suspended state, because nothing is renewed. Solve's robots file permits automated access, so the site can be checked by script as well as by hand. If no page comes up, ask for the challenge name, the year and the exact tier claimed; an application clinic or a custom challenge run under a sponsor's name accounts for most claims that cannot be found.
